Can we talk about carbs for a minute?

Because protein is having a BIG moment right now.

And I am HERE for women getting enough protein. Most women need MORE protein, especially as we want to maintain muscle, get stronger, and lose body fat.

But somewhere along the way, I think carbs got left behind.

We've spent YEARS being taught to fear them. Now we're being told to add protein to everything.

And don't get me wrong. Convenient protein options can be incredibly helpful when you're busy and struggling to get enough protein.

But adding protein to a bag of highly processed chips or cookies doesn't automatically make it a health food (or even a high protein food).

And getting enough protein doesn't mean you need to avoid carbohydrates.

So naturally, the question becomes...

Which carbs SHOULD I eat?

For me, it's simple: real, minimally processed carbs and starches.

Oats. Quinoa. Potatoes. Rice. Beans. Chickpeas. Hummus. Fruit.

Protein is important. Carbs are not the enemy. And you don't need to turn every food into a “protein food” to eat well.

Build your meals around real food. Get enough protein. Include quality carbs. And be aware of how quickly added fats like oils, dressings, cheese, nuts and sauces can pile up.

What carb have you been afraid to eat because you thought it would make you gain weight?

And if you've been struggling to figure out what your plate should actually look like for fat loss, I'm happy to point you in the right direction.
